Usambara, Tanzania – May 2024: In Tanzania’s Usambara Mountains, a youth-led agricultural revolution is combating climate change. Supported by Irish Aid, Global Kilimo Smart’s “Youth-Led Actions for Climate Change Solutions” programme empowered 237 farmers (exceeding its 230-target) with sustainable tools to build resilient livelihoods between December 2023 and April 2024.
Rooted in Science, Driven by Youth
The programme delivered:
- Soil Regeneration: 23% increase in organic matter and 19% less soil erosion through Greenleaf Desmodium and Elephant Grass.
- Higher Yields: 18% average crop increase, boosting food security and incomes.
- Climate Action: 52+ tons of CO₂ sequestered annually via 5,000+ Elephant Grass plantings.
- Unshakable Resilience: 92% of farmers now confidently manage climate shocks.
- Stronger Livelihoods: 85% of participants reported ≥12% income growth.
Farmer Spotlight: Fatima’s Transformation
Fatima, once dependent on food aid, now leads change:
- Achieved an 18% maize yield surge in one season.
- Increased household income by 16% through surplus sales.
- Mentors neighboring women as a farmer-group leader.
